Boasting in God

Psalm 20:7
Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God.
After the Israelites had left the Egyptian bondage, their former master, Pharaoh, decided he wanted to retain their services as slaves. He sent the very formidable and famous Egyptian army after them, chariots blazing after their prey. He probably thought they would quickly surrender (the Israelites having just left servitude had no formal army ). Here we have the contrast David is talking about. The Egyptian with their chariots, soldiers and great military might. The Israelites have only God.
In the end, God was all they needed. The Lord opened up the Red Sea and allowed the Israelites safe passage. The Egyptians followed, and were swallowed up in the sea. Without an arrow drawn, without a sword unsheathed, the Israelites had defeated one of the greatest military powers of that time. The Egyptians were so thoroughly defeated that not one member of the army remained (Exodus 14:28). The Egyptians may have boasted in their chariots, but they were no match for the true and living God.
So what is it that we boast in? There are many things people boast in and rely on. It may literally be strength, or the protection from an army. Others might view their financial strength as what protects them. Many times people will boast in their relationships. Yet in the end, none of these things can truly protect us. Money can run out, or even be lost. Strength fails us and is temporal. Armies fall, sometimes to others that are considered weaker. People inevitably let us down. There is only one thing that we can put our trust in and not be let down. There is only one thing that can protect us for all of eternity. That, of course, is God. So what is it you will rely on? Where does your strength come from?
Some boast in chariots and some in horses, But we will boast in the name of the LORD, our God.
