Peace in God
Faith, Holy Living May 22nd, 2009
Throughout time, Christians have shown a remarkable capability. No matter what else is around them, no matter what calamity may strike, they almost seem to never be rattled. There is an inner strength to them. How are they able to do it? What allows them to keep their heads high in the direst of times? Do they know something others do not? Take Daniel for example. I imagine when he was about to be thrown in the Lion’s Den he was not screaming or pleading for his life. Instead, I imagine an unnerving calm about his presence. He was sure that his God could deliver him, but also content to do for righteousness sake (Dan. 6).
This type of peace is not some psychology technique or an ignorance of reality. Instead its caused by our relationship with God. Because we have a relationship with God, we can have peace in our lives. We do not have to be anxious about anything. Instead we can go to God in prayer, knowing that he will be watching over us and that He is the one in charge of everything (Phil. 4:6-7). That is a calming thought. The Being who created the universe is the one who is watching over us. What greater comfort could we have then that?
Finally we can have peace because we actually have a deeper understanding of reality than most. Consider again Daniel. He was not scared to lose his life. He knew that because of his faithfulness that he had something grander to look forward to than anything this life could offer. Him losing his life was not the end of existence in the slightest. Because of his relationship with God, he knew that these man could not do anything of lasting consequence. As long as we are sanctified by God, anything that happens to us can not keep us from an eternity with our Father. In that blessed assurance, we can find peace.
