The Hand of God

Psalm 37:24

When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.

This is such a beautiful passage. The imagery is that of God watching over a loved one. You can imagine a father walking his child up stairs. He holds on to their hand to offer protection. They can not be protected from everything. If their foot catches on the step, they will no doubt stumble. They may bang their knee and it may lead to crying. Yet they are protected from falling all the way down the stairs, a fall from which they might not be able to recover.

As a parent has a protective grasp on their child, so the Lord has a grasp on us. It is amazing that the Psalmist says that He holds our hand. That should make us feel so safe. It is a tender and compassionate hold, one that both protects and reminds of protection. We need to remember that the Lord does in fact protect us. The power of this passage is that the Lord will not let us be hurled headlong. He will protect us from falling.

Sometimes it feels as if our lives are falling into an abyss. It could be because of stress or because our sin. We can feel as if our lives are spinning out of control. We know we are going to fall, and it is a fall that we cannot recover from. We need to remember that the Lord has our hand. As long as we continue to hold onto His hand, we will be able to overcome whatever is thrown at us. God will always provide for us a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). He will not allow us to tumble down the stairs, but He will keep us from being overcome.

When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.
