Trusting God

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.

It is important that we trust the Lord. This is actually the very definition of faith. However, our trust is not blind. It is based on all that we see about Him. God is worthy of our trust. He is the creator of the universe, and specifically the creator of man. No one knows better what we were created to do than God. What is wonderful about this arrangement is that He has not left us blind, guessing at what we are supposed to do. Instead, He has told us exactly what He wants us to do.

Man, on the other hand, has shown just how lacking he is in judgment. Our own lives are clear testaments to this. Think about times when you have gone away from God’s commands and how that wound up being the wrong decision. Many times our judgment is lacking. We often act like a person trying to operate a complicated machine or computer. Having refused to read the instruction manual, we find ourselves randomly pushing buttons that look attractive to us, hoping to get a positive result. Invariable we push the metaphorical big red button, leaving destruction and pain in our wake.

Of course we could avoid such problems if we would just trust in the Lord. He has given us the instruction manual. He has told us what is best for us. We face a choice. Will we trust Him or ourselves? Once we choose to trust in Him, we must go forward, in faith, without any doubting (James 1:6-7). It must be with all of our heart. After all, throughout time, God is the only one who has proven Himself truly trustworthy. Over and over He has kept His word. His plans and commandments have been for our benefit. Who better is there to trust?

Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.
